HBI Project on Latin American Jewish & Gender Studies (LAJGS) with The Latin American Jewish Studies Association (LAJSA) announces a workshop at Brandeis University
Engendering Activism: The Multiple Impacts of Latin American Jews
Hadassah Brandeis Institute of Brandeis University, Waltham MA, October 27-28, 2019
“Engendering Activism: The Multiple Impacts of Latin American Jews,” is a Workshop to be held at Brandeis University. The workshop will explore the impactful role of Latin American Jews who have used the visual and performing arts, literature, and activism to effect social and political change in their societies. By focusing on the combined Jewish and gendered participation of those individuals and groups, the Workshop will broaden current research in the fields of Jewish Studies, Latin American Studies, and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.
This workshop is envisioned as a collaborative and dynamic meeting, designed for papers to be circulated in advance, with the aim of producing a dedicated issue of the soon-to-be-launched LAJSA journal Latin American Jewish Studies. To that end, we request individual proposals of 350 or fewer words, to be sent by July 1st. Participants will be notified of acceptance July 21, 2019, and we request completed papers, ready for circulation by September 27, 2019.
We will then create panels of 2-3 participants, each with a corresponding discussant. All workshop participants will be expected to briefly present the context of their research alongside its intended contribution to the field, and then workshop their research aided by the guidance of the discussant and the engaged participation of all conference participants.
In addition, the Workshop will convene two roundtable discussions for all participants:
1. How do we as academics conceive of our roles in terms of engagement with the broader community? What common ground can we find between the academy and the community writ large?
2. How do we best integrate this new field of Latin American Jewish and Gender Studies into our pedagogy in different disciplines?
Closer to the dates of the workshop we will send more detailed prompts on these two roundtable topics, to help participants prepare for these additional conversations.
We welcome papers that tap into different fields of inquiry and promote dialogue between different critical approaches, including comparative papers that bring a global (transnational or hemispheric) lens to their topic. Papers may be presented in English, Spanish, or Portuguese. Opening remarks for individual papers should not exceed 10 minutes.
Deadline for the submission of proposals is July 1, 2019. Please send proposals to: lajewsgender@gmail.com
In order to be included in the program, accepted participants must be current LAJSA members and must register for the workshop. LAJSA membership dues can be paid at: http://www.lajsa.org/membership-payments/
Details on workshop registration and attendance will be included with the acceptance letters.
Conference Committee Representatives: Dalia Wassner (HBI-LAJGS), Adriana M. Brodsky (LAJSA). Write to us with any inquiries or communications at lajewsgender@gmail.com
