The Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies at Brown University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant or associate professor in Lusophone African and/or Portuguese literary and cultural studies. Preference will be given to applicants with a minimum of two years of teaching experience at the university level. Areas of specialization are open to any field/period in Portuguese and/or Lusophone African literary and cultural studies. We are mainly interested in applications from candidates whose research covers a wide range of cultural expressions from Lusophone Africa and Portugal, particularly in literature. Applications from scholars working on Portuguese and Lusophone African literary and cultural studies in a comparative context are particularly encouraged. The Department also welcomes candidates to apply whose secondary or tertiary research areas focus on the legacy of the Portuguese colonial presence in Asia (Goa, Macau, East Timor).

The successful applicant will demonstrate exceptional promise as a rigorous and dynamic scholar for whom excellence in research is interwoven with a proven dedication to inclusive teaching and mentorship of undergraduates and graduate students. They will also contribute to the intellectual life of the department and wider university, supporting our efforts to build a diverse scholarly environment. A Ph.D. in Lusophone African and/or Portuguese literary and cultural studies or an equivalent degree is required by the position start date, July 1, 2024. Native or near-native fluency in Portuguese and English is expected.
